Who is the goddess in your life? Is it you?
A very special brooch representing Selene the goddess of the moon in Greek mythology.
Daughter of Titans Hyperion and Theia, she drives her moon chariot across the heavens. Selene is the personification of the Moon itself and is represented as Luna in Roman mythology.
The central character in this fabulous and quite magical brooch, Selene is driving her chariot with two horses atop the clouds.
The brooch is made of carved conch shell set into a pinchbeck metal frame with flourishes. The back is open. Tiny claws secure the cameo.
A cameo is a material that is carved with a raised relief that often depicts a profile of a face or a mythical scene. Cameos are commonly made out of shell, coral, stone, lava, or glass. These carvings are set in either gold or silver although many are unset or put within non-precious metals such as this one.
Unsigned, it is not gold and is most probably brass or what is called call Pinchbeck. Pinchbeck is a form of brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, mixed in proportions so that it closely resembles gold in appearance. It was invented in the early 18th Century.
