This is an old brooch, a big brooch, a gorgeous brooch.

Gorgeous. This large slice of polished Scottish Jasper reflects the popularity of the natural world in the Victorian times.

Jasper is a silica microcrystalline Quartz rock that, unlike agate, is composed of 5 to 25% Iron. This makes it an opaque material and the colour can be red, yellow, green, brown, black or rarely blue. Some jaspers are banded like agate but these bands are opaque. This piece is banded and brown.

Queen Victoria's love of Scotland and it's landscape created a resurgence in both Gothic and natural stone jewellery. This piece is very different in its clean and almost modern design. The stone is set within a sterling octagon shaped frame with large smooth claws keeping it secure.

Jaspers are the nurturers, the healers and the spirit stones of courage and wisdom. They all carry a strong connection to the Earth's energy, making the jasper healing properties very beneficial for grounding, stability and strength.
