A vintage, open work ermine crown heraldic brooch. Late 19th or early 20th Century. An ermine is an animal known for its very white coat. Alongside a crown it symbolises heraldry or royalty as well as purity.
The symbol is associated with Queen Anne of Brittany who encountered an ermine that ran towards hunters rather than muddy its coat in a puddle.
Although strongly associated with Anne, the ermine was part of Breton heraldry from as far back at the 13th century.
